Date of launch of animation “Shrek 5”

Shrek 5 is officially in production, according to a press release of 9 July from Dreamworks Animation and Universal Pictures, and will arrive in cinemas on 1 July 2026, just in time for the 25th anniversary of the first Shrek film.

Return of original distribution

Although the details of the story are still secret, the original trio will return, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz replaying the roles of Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona respectively.

Recapitation: original story Shrek

The first film in 2001 followed Shrek’s story that started on a mission alongside his noble horse Donkey to save Princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a dragon. The story took a turn when it revealed that Fiona herself was turning into an ogre after nightfall, an appearance she kept after she and Shrek fell in love.

Shrek franchise expansion

Over the years, the story has been expanded in the following films: Shrek 2 since 2004, Shrek the Third since 2007 and the last entry into the franchise, Shrek forever since 2010.

The film’s personal impact on Mike Myers

And while the fans are undoubtedly delighted to return to the Land far, far after 13 years, Myers himself talked about how much he meant to make the films – especially in terms of the unique story.

The single story and the theme of acceptance

“I like the idea of taking a fairy tale and overturning it,” he said for GQ in 2022, “and showing that all traditional villains are good people, and all traditional heroes are bad guys.”

He went on, “And I realized it’s a dramatic role. Halfway up, I said, ‘There’s an emotional center here.'”

But above all, the theme of acceptance in Shrek is something he could identify with.

“You know the old joke, ‘l wouldn’t want to be part of a club that would accept me as a member.’ I always felt like that,” he said. “The concept of moving from an ogre who hates himself to an ogre who accepts himself was significant to me.”

“I liked playing Shrek,” he added. “If I had to make a Shrek a year, I’d be delighted.”
